The short version
We set no cookies of our own for tracking. Every cookie described here is placed by Google, either to measure traffic or to show advertising. You can decline both categories and the site will work exactly as before, minus personalised ads.
Categories we use
Strictly necessary
These keep the site functioning and remember your cookie choice so we stop asking. They cannot be switched off. We store your consent decision in your browser’s local storage for 12 months.
Analytics
Google Analytics sets cookies such as _ga and _ga_* to count visits and tell one session apart from another. These typically last up to two years. They tell us which guides people actually read; they are not used to identify you personally.
Advertising
Google AdSense and its partners may set cookies such as IDE, test_cookie and __gads to measure ad performance, limit how often you see the same ad, and personalise what you see. Lifespans vary from a few minutes to roughly 13 months, and are set by Google rather than by us.
What our tools store
The SMART goal builder, career plan builder, interview pack and side-hustle check run entirely in your browser. Anything you type stays on your device and is never sent to our servers or to any advertiser.
Managing cookies
- Use the cookie banner when you first arrive, or the “Cookie settings” link in the footer to change your mind later.
- Turn off personalised advertising at Google Ads Settings.
- Opt out across many vendors at once via aboutads.info/choices or the Network Advertising Initiative.
- Every major browser lets you block or delete cookies in its settings. Blocking all cookies may break parts of other websites you use.
